Harrier (Harrier UK) is a specialist health, safety, and crowd management consultancy primarily focused on the live events and entertainment industry. They help event organisers plan safe events, manage risks, and navigate complex safety legislation – and they are committed to delivering their services sustainably. Since 2023, Harrier have worked with onboard:earth to measure the carbon footprint of their travel, reduce it where possible and offset unavoidable emissions through our Trees+ verified offset programme.
We spoke to Davina Rowe, Project Co-ordinator at Harrier about how they go about measuring and mitigating carbon impacts from travel and the benefits of funding nature through onboard:earth.
Qu. What are the benefits to Harrier UK of working with onboard: earth?
Working with onboard:earth gives us a practical and transparent way to address one of the biggest environmental impacts in our sector; travel to and from events. onboard:earth has helped us actively measure and understand those emissions, and then take meaningful action to reduce and balance them through their projects. Overall, working with onboard: earth has been a great way for us to turn intent into action!”
Qu: How do you measure your company’s travel footprint?
We measure our company’s travel footprint by keeping a clear record of all team mileage and modes of transport for each event we support. Our team also keep hold of travel receipts, such as train tickets, which helps us accurately track and understand our travel impact. Depending on our client’s needs, this information is gathered either ahead of an event or reviewed afterwards. This approach helps us keep accurate records, while making sure we’ve got a full picture of our travel emissions across different projects.
Qu: How do you reduce your travel impacts?
Through our internal operational practices, we’ve implemented a number of initiatives to reduce our travel impacts. Our teams travel to events both locally and further afield, and we encourage the use of public transport wherever possible. We also minimise travel by keeping in-person internal meetings to a minimum and using remote communication where appropriate.
We consider the impact of events on the local community in our decision making and planning and work with contractors to support elements such as traffic management and noise pollution. We use local suppliers and small business accommodation providers where possible to put money back into the local economy and help cut transport emissions.
