In 2024, OpenAir St.Gallen offered completely free public transport for all festival ticket holders (including artists, crew members, partners, etc.). This milestone was achieved through an expanded partnership with the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) and local transit providers. Attendees can now travel to and from the festival across Switzerland without any additional cost with public transport.
The journey to this point reflects a long-standing commitment to sustainable mobility. From 2005 to 2013, festival-goers received a 20% discount on train tickets and a 5% discount on festival tickets when purchased together. In 2014, the train ticket discount was increased to 50%, and in 2024, the transition to full coverage was completed.
As a result, more than 90% of all visitors now travel to the festival by train, bus, bike or on foot. Yet, the remaining 10% who arrive by car or motorcycle are still responsible for the majority of CO₂ emissions associated with festival travel.
Today, the number of vehicles on-site has dropped significantly. With just around 900 parked cars during these 4 days, usage is decreasing steadily. The festival’s management is already discussing whether to eliminate on-site parking altogether in future editions, further reinforcing its sustainability mission.
