As part of a vibrant global community that champions inclusion, freedom, and forward thinking ideas, Junction 2 believes that the electronic music industry shares a collective responsibility for social and environmental action. Recognising the climate emergency, Junction 2 launched a 3-year sustainability plan in 2023, committing to going beyond net zero by 2025.
Key achievements over the 3 years
- Carbon emissions – Emissions per event day reduced by 33.2% through the use of HVO fuel that has a 90% lower carbon footprint and switching diesel generators to pre-charged battery packs.
- Waste – Waste per person per day dropped each year from 51g in 2023 to 41g in 2025 through increasing reusables and storing event materials
- Recycling – Recycling rates increased to 52% in 2025 from 43% in 2024 and 37% in 2023 through increased sorting and introducing wood skips.
- Food – Gradually removed all meat from the trader menus going 100% veggie and vegan in 2025.
The Unavoidable Emissions
For the unavoidable emissions Junction 2 worked with onboard:earth:
Tackling Direct Emissions for the direct “Scope 1” emissions, the carbon footprint from the energy and waste management will be removed from the atmosphere through a regenerative farming carbon-removal project in the Indo-Gangetic Plains, India. Certified by VERRA, this initiative will:
- Restore the Land: Using techniques like reduced tillage and direct seeding of rice to restore degraded soil.
- Empower Farmers: Over 5,601 farmers have joined the project, seeing income increases of up to 16%.
- Improve Resource Efficiency: The project has led to a 22.6% improvement in water use efficiency in the region.
Balancing the Journey: to address the “indirect” scope 3 emissions, the largest part of the footprint which includes artist and staff travel, contractor logistics, audience journeys and food sales carbon was balanced through the Trees+ programme, with a bespoke local UK community angle.
Global Impact: Clean Cooking in Togo: supporting a women-led fuel-efficient cookstove project in Togo, West Africa.
- Deforestation: These stoves reduce the need for firewood by 52%, protecting local forests.
- Health & Time: By reducing woodsmoke, the project improves air quality for women and girls. It also slashes the time spent gathering wood from three hours a day to less than one, allowing more time for education and farming.
Local Impact: Cultivate Colindale: Closer to home, just 12 miles from our site at Boston Manor Park, we are supporting Cultivate Colindale at Heybourne Park this funds:
- A community tree nursery and organic allotment providing fresh food for local families.
- The creation of a wildflower meadow to boost urban biodiversity for pollinators.
- Volunteering: The Junction 2 team will be heading to the garden annually to get their hands dirty and support this wildlife haven.
The plan was to go ‘beyond net zero’ within three years and Junction 2 went beyond beyond by working with audience and artists to invest in nature projects, our local park’s ecosystem, and the community with artists donating 1% of their fee to the 1% for the Community Fund which went to The Arts Centre Hounslow.
