onboard:earth launches 2025 Green Travel & Transport Guide for Events

The updated onboard:earth Green Travel & Transport Guide for tackling events’ travel impacts (5th edition) shares insights and valuable suggestions for organisers. Findings are founded on onboard:earth’s 10 years of expertise in supporting live events to reduce the environmental impact of travel, alongside the latest research and findings from festival travel data and successful campaigns to promote low-carbon alternatives in 2024.

Guidance includes the potential impact of recent government policy, along with inspiring initiatives from across the live events industry that demonstrate how practical action and effective communications have engaged audiences in lowering travel and cutting carbon emissions.

Case studies include Glastonbury’s artist-led campaign with Trainline, Run4Wales’ collaboration with Transport for Wales, and Chepstow Summer Sessions’ partnership with First Transport Event Solutions. These highlight how collaboration with transport providers can make public transport more affordable and practical for event-goers. Recent communications campaigns from Love Saves The Day, Forwards Festival and Greenbelt Festival show how effective messaging can boost the uptake of shared transport.

New for this edition is a focus on best practices for collecting non-audience travel data, following a project with Citizen Ticket in 2024. The findings provide event organisers with advice on how to measure this notoriously tricky data set. The new onboard:earth Travel Toolkit for Events includes a pull-out quick guide for data collection from all event stakeholders, as well as suggested surveys for various audiences and tools to record and analyse the results.

“This 2025 edition demonstrates how a focus on transport partnerships and communication is the key to getting event-goers out of cars and into more sustainable shared forms of transport. The Travel Toolkit for Events is designed from an event organisers perspective to bring all the knowledge into one place; step-by-step from data collection, to understanding the results, to taking practical action with initiatives that are proven to reduce travel impacts.”  Chris Johnson, CEO, onboard:earth

The Green Travel Guide shares how events can address unavoidable travel emissions by donating to support onboard:earth’s environmental project partners, to protect and regenerate threatened ecosystems and support communities on the frontline of climate change and fund UK-based, local-scale community-benefit clean energy generation.

Event coach provider Big Green Coach has supported the guide and contributes 15 years of insight into the positive benefits through providing dedicated coaches to festivals and events as part of the solution to reducing travel impacts.
