In 2019, The 1975 committed to planting a tree for every ticket sold ahead of their arena tour of UK and Ireland for 2020 (now postponed until 2021 due to coronavirus). The band’s commitment to action on climate change is clear; their most recent album, Notes on a Conditional Form, included the song ‘People,’ which features climate change activist Greta Thunberg and they pledged profits to civil disobedience movement Extinction Rebellion.
Find out more about onboard.earth’s Trees+ programme, through which tour travel can be balanced through tree planting, protection of threatened rainforest and ecosystem regeneration.
In addition to the tree-planting initiative, the 1975 unveiled a sustainable merchandise range; instead of releasing new t-shirts for the tour, fans were asked to bring the band’s old shirts or those of any other bands to be reprinted with a new design.
For one show in the tour in Finsbury Park, London July 2021 they plan to use sustainably sourced HVO fuel, paperless ticketing, repurposed merchandise, a traffic light system highlighting the carbon footprint of every meal and 1,975 trees will be planted throughout the surrounding boroughs of Haringey, Hackney and Islington in partnership with Trees for Cities.
