onboard:earth are proud to partner with Project Seagrass through our Trees+ environmental programme. This is a milestone moment for onboard:earth, as Project Seagrass is our very first marine conservation project partner. Their vital work aligns perfectly with our mission to support the live events industry in funding community-led projects that protect and restore threatened ecosystems.
Who are Project Seagrass?
Established by scientists in 2013, Project Seagrass is a UK-based, global-facing marine conservation organisation dedicated to securing a future for seagrass.
They empower communities, champion scientific research, and take direct action to map, conserve, and restore seagrass meadows. In the UK, their efforts include:
- Active Restoration: Planting across North Wales, the Solent, Scotland, and more.
- Innovation: Establishing the UK’s first Seagrass Nursery to scale up restoration.
- Citizen Science: Encouraging participation in their SeagrassSpotter programme.
“Project Seagrass was created with the intention of reversing the loss of seagrass… Only by bringing together a diverse range of identities, experiences and perspectives can we respond to global challenges.” – Project Seagrass
Why Seagrass?
Seagrass meadows are critical to all life on our planet: marine flowering plants that form vast, dense meadows in shallow waters globally, from the tropics to the Arctic. These remarkable ecosystems provide irreplaceable services:
- Food Security: They act as essential nurseries, supporting fish production that feeds communities worldwide.
- Clean Water: Seagrass meadows are natural filters, significantly enhancing water quality.
- Coastal Protection: They are the ocean’s buffers, protecting coastlines from erosion, storms, and flooding.
- Climate Change Mitigation: Crucially, they are powerful ‘blue carbon’ sinks, playing a key role in carbon sequestration and long-term storage, helping to mitigate climate change.
The Urgent Threat: Despite their immense importance, seagrasses are declining. Since 1880, we’ve lost approximately 20% of global seagrass meadows, with declines persisting at an alarming 1-2% per year. Unfortunately, they remain one of the least protected coastal ecosystems, facing constant threats from coastal development, pollution (nutrient runoff), and climate change.
Your Trees+ Donation Makes a Deeper Impact
Now, when you offset 1 tonne of carbon with a £29 donation to our Trees+ programme, you are directly contributing to an even wider range of environmental and community impacts, including:
✅ Marine Restoration: Restoring and protecting marine seagrass beds across the UK and globally with Project Seagrass.
✅ Global Ecosystems: Funding Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) projects & protecting threatened Rainforests around the world.
✅ Community & Trees: Tree planting and the development of sustainable livelihoods with in Northern Malawi.
Join us in building climate action for the UK live events industry and supporting this crucial work.
